Johns Hopkins Hands Mary Washington 3-1 Loss

Thompson and Matyas Score First Career Goals

The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins-3, Mary Washington-1
• Records: JHU (2-0) • UMW (1-1)
• Location: Fredericksburg, VA • Battleground Turf
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins field hockey team got goals from three different scorers as the Blue Jays beat the host Mary Washington Eagles, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Freshman Izzy Thompson put the Blue Jays on the board early, scoring off a rebound just 3:38 into the game. The lead was short-lived however as Morgan MacCartney banged home her rebound after a Jodie Baris save to tie the game at the 11:40-mark. The goal came after a string of four straight corners for the Eagles.
• Hopkins capitalized on a penalty corner at 18:08 to retake the lead. Sophomore Seema Sajjan took the corner and freshman Sarah Matyas fired a shot that was blocked. She collected the rebound and beat Jessica Cavolt to put JHU up 2-1.
• Senior Lucy Reider nearly made it a two-goal lead less than five minutes into the second half with a shot that eluded Cavolt, but Meredith LeBel cleared the ball out of danger. Senior Megan Ophel added some cushion to the Blue Jays' lead at the 63:32-mark when she blasted a shot off the keeper's pads and into the cage. Mary Washington would get one last push with three penalty corners in the waning seconds, but the Hopkins defense stood strong.

What it Means
• Today's game was the first meeting between Hopkins and Mary Washington since October 2013. The Blue Jays improve to 7-12 all-time against the Eagles, earning their first win in the series since September 1, 2005.
