Will Wortmann shut out Swarthmore with 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief to earn the win in the nightcap.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Charlie Clarke (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) drew a bases-loaded, game-ending walk in the bottom of the 10th inning in the nightcap, helping the Bullets salvage a split versus Swarthmore in a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader on Sunday at a sunny Kirchhoff Field.

Swarthmore (12-21, 5-8 CC) won the opener 10-1 before the Bullets rallied for a 6-5 victory in the second game.

Heading into the final week of Centennial Conference play, Gettysburg (20-13-2, 8-6 CC) finds itself in third place in the conference standings, with the top four teams qualifying or the conference playoffs.

Junior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) enjoyed a 6-for-9 day at the plate for the Bullets, who reached 20 wins for the sixth year in a row, while senior Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles.

On the mound, sophomore Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) turned in a stellar relief appearance in the second game for Gettysburg, blanking the Garnet with 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball.

With the score tied 5-5, Tom sparked the Bullets in the 10th inning of the nightcap, reaching on a hard-hit infield single before moving to second when the third baseman's throw to first was thrown away. With first base open, senior J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) was intentionally walked, and freshman Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) loaded the bases with no outs when he reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt down the third base line.

Reliever Sawyer Lake then retired the next two batters before Clarke was called on to pinch hit. Making just his ninth plate appearance of the season, he took four straight balls to bring home Tom with the game-winning run before teammates mobbed him after touching first base.

The Bullets never led in the opener, when Swarthmore pushed across an unearned run in the first versus starting pitcher Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). The Garnet added three in the third before Gettysburg made it a 4-1 game on an RBI-single from Gasparro in the fourth. However, Swarthmore picked up another unearned run in the fifth, then put it out of reach with five runs over the seventh and eighth.

Noah Linhart (2-4) picked up the win for the Garnet, scattering eight hits over seven innings. He allowed just an unearned run while striking out nine.

Sneed was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for Gettysburg while Tom went 2-for-4 with a double.

DeMartino (4-1) threw six innings and charged with the loss, yielding five runs (two earned) on 10 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Freshman Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) pitched the seventh before classmate Danny Brace (Berwyn, Pa./Devon Prep) closed out the game on the mound for the Bullets with a pair of scoreless innings.

A.J. Liu, Charles Levitt, and Cole Beeker all picked up three hits in the opener for Swarthmore, which outhit the Bullets 17-8.

In the second game, Gettysburg jumped on starter Ryan Warm with three runs on four hits. Sneed roped his fifth-straight hit of the day with a one-out double before scoring on a single from senior Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). Tom followed up with an RBI-double before Gasparro capped the inning with a run-scoring single.

Senior Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge), meanwhile, pitched well in the early going, no-hitting the Garnet through the first three innings and tossing five shutout innings to open the game. However, Swarthmore broke through in the sixth with a five-run inning to assume a 5-3 lead. Wortmann prevented further damage when he came on to get the final out of the inning, stranding a runner on second.

Warm settled in after his rock start, blanking the Bullets from the second through the sixth while retiring 13 in a row at one point. But after Swarthmore took the lead, the hosts answered with two in the bottom of the sixth to draw even at 5-all. Tom drew a leadoff walk versus Warm before Lucido singled, and two batters later Frodsham drilled a two-run single into center to tie the game. Junior Josh Cubell (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) followed up with a single of his own to chase but reliever Jackson Ramey recorded the final out of the inning, then shut out the Bullets in the seventh.

Lake, a freshman, then came on for his first career relief appearance after starting seven games earlier in the year. He tossed a pair of shutout innings before Gettysburg's final rally.

In the meantime, it was smooth sailing for Wortmann (2-3), who allowed just two baserunners, with neither reaching second. He faced his biggest threat in the seventh, when, with the game tied, Wesley Fishburn drew a two-out walk. Fishburn then appeared to have stolen second, but cleanup hitter Conor Elliott was called out on batter's interference to end the inning. Wortmann also hit a batter with two outs in the eighth, but was perfect the rest of the way, retiring his final seven batters.

Sneed, Tom, and Gasparro notched two hits apiece in the nightcap for the Bullets. Brown came away with a no-decision, tossing 5 2/3 innings while allowing five runs, though only one was earned.

Lake (3-3) was charged with the loss for Swarthmore while Warm struck out seven through 5 2/3 innings.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, when it hosts McDaniel at 3:30 p.m. in a single game.
