Rachel Jackson scored the game's only goal just over six minutes into overtime to lift the fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg at Homewood Field Wednesday night.
How it Happened
• Jackson's game-winner came after the Blue Jays had controlled the early minutes of overtime. Santangelo found Jackson posted up in the middle of the box and rifled a pass to her. Jackson settled quickly, spun to her right and got a step on her defender before ripping a shot into the back of the net. Her goal ended a game that started slowly, but picked up in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
• Neither team came that close to denting the score sheet in the first half and the shots totaled just nine before halftime with JHU holding a 6-3 advantage there. The two best scoring chances of the half belonged to the Blue Jays as
Michelle Santangelo sent a 15-yarder wide in the 16
th minute and Madelyn Cunningham went low in the 36
th minute to save a dipping 20-yard shot from the top by
Maggie Coulson.
• Gettysburg had back-to-back golden opportunities to grab a 1-0 lead in the 59
th minute, but Molly O'Shea's shot from in-tight was smothered by Johns Hopkins goalie
Robyn Lipschultz and the rebound attempt by Lauren Miesemer whistled just high and wide from 12 yards out.
• The Bullets just missed another chance in the 76
th minute as a loose-ball scramble at the top of the box landed the ball at the foot of Erika Muskus, who shoveled a shot towards the near post, but Lipschultz made a diving save on the slow-roller to keep the game knotted.
• Cunningham kept it scoreless in the 84
th minute with a quick-reaction save on
Rachel Jackson. The Blue Jays worked a perfect give-and-go in the box between Santangelo and Jackson and Jackson ripped one towards the near post from nine yards out, but Cunningham was in perfect position and punched it wide.
• Jackson had another golden chance in the 88
th minute as she went in on a partial breakaway, but her rip to the far side hit the inside of the far post and bounced back towards Cunningham, who covered it before the Blue Jays could punch home the rebound. Eight minutes later, the third time was the charm for Jackson, who netter her game-winner at the 96:07 mark.
