Burch's No Hitter Leads UMW Softball in Doubleheader Sweep of Gettysburg

Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Burch threw a no hitter and gained a save in the nightcap, as the University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Gettysburg College, 3-0 and 8-5, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 16-11 on the season.

The Eagles started game one with a pair of runs in the first. Emma Dickson led off with a single, and moved to third on an error. Caroline Bird provided an RBI ground out, and Emma Schieda followed with an RBI single. The Eagles added one in the sixth, as Bird singled and Schieda provided an RBI double.

Meanwhile, Burch mowed down the Bullets with her first collegiate no hitter, allowing just two walks while striking out 11.

In the second game, which featured a 50 minute delay for lightning, and sleet, followed by sunshine, the Eagles broke away for an 8-5 win. The Eagles scored two in the first on a two run double from Caroline Bird, but Gettysburg gained the lead with three in the second.

UMW went ahead to stay in the second, scoring four runs. Maggie Mrowka provided a bases-clearing triple for the big hit in the inning, and then scored on an error. Gettysburg scored runs in the third and fifth, but the Eagles, after the delay, added on two runs on an error and a passed ball.

Mrowka and Brigid Ward each had two hits for the Eagles in game two. Bird drove in a pair. Taylor Hudson gained the win in relief with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief. Burch gained the save with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief, with five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Virginia Wesleyan University at 3:00 p.m.
