GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jordan Depetres scored with 1:17 left in the second overtime to lift No. 18 St. John Fisher College past No. 11 Gettysburg College 11-10 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Wednesday.
 
St. John Fisher (17-2) recorded its first-ever victory in the national tournament and advances to play No. 5 Williams College (16-3), which beat Keene State University 21-10, in the third round on Saturday.
 
After falling behind 9-7 following a goal by Nicholas Miller early in the fourth quarter, Gettysburg (14-5) rallied to tie the game with two quick goals by seniors Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) and Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence). Gray ran his way to the cage for an unassisted tally at 10:07 and just 54 seconds later, Harvey lit the lamp, intercepting a pass by goalie Darin Eakins and rifling a shot into the goal at 9:13.
 
Eakins post six of his game-high 21 saves in the fourth quarter and continued to hold the Bullets off the board in the final minutes until junior attackman Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) drove in for a low shot to put his team in front 10-9 with 1:40 to go.
 
St. John Fisher forced a turnover with just over a minute left in the game and set up its offense coming out of a timeout. After working the ball around the cage, Jack Mulvihill struck for his fourth goal to tie the game 10-10 with 38 ticks remaining.
 
Gettysburg's defense came up big in the final seconds of regulation with senior Jackson Mumford (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) knocking the ball loose and sophomore PJ Dettor (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) scooping the ground ball. A last-second shot by Gray in front of the cage was smothered by Eakins to send the game to overtime.
 
Eakins posted two more saves in the first overtime to keep the score deadlocked. In the second extra period, the Bullets fired a trio of shots wide of the cage before the Cardinals regained possession. Depetres moved behind the cage and found a narrow seam past his defender and Gettysburg goalie Scott MacMillan (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) on the left side for the game-winner.
In the opening quarter, the Bullets locked down St. John Fisher's high-powered offense, holding the visitors to just five shots. Sophomore Kadin Kightlinger (Purcellville, Va./Bishop O'Connell) gave the hosts the early lead with a goal following a pass from senior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic).
 
Sophomore Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) came out with a quick goal 53 seconds into the second period to spot Gettysburg a 2-0 lead. Mulvihill put the Cardinals on the board at 13:32 and added a second goal at 11:48 to tie things up.
 
Kolen put the Bullets back in front with a pair of goals and Chance Gates closed out the first-half scoring for St. John Fisher to make it 4-3 at the break.
 
The attack for both teams picked up the pace in the third quarter, combining for 25 shots and eight goals. Junior long-stick midfielder Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) tallied the period's first goal with sophomore Alex Ulrich (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) dishing out the assist.
 
The Cardinals tallied the next two goals to force the first of three ties in the quarter. Junior defenseman Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) rocketed his ninth goal of the season from long range to break a 5-5 tie. After Fletcher gave the Bullets a 7-6 advantage, St. John Fisher surged in front with the next three goals ending with Miller's aforementioned tally at the start of the fourth quarter.
 
Gettysburg led in shots 51-45, while St. John Fisher finished with the edge in ground balls (39-34) and face-off wins (17-9).
 
Kolen led the Bullets with three goals and became just the third player to net 60 goals in a season at Gettysburg. His season point total of 78 marked the sixth-best output in program history. Fletcher finished with two goals.
 
Sophomore Andrew Horn (Bronxville, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) posted six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior Eric Carr (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church) picked up four ground balls and one caused turnover. MacMillan tallied nine saves and two ground balls. Senior midfielder Ryan Kelly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) posted a caused turnover and finished his career having appeared in more games (78) than any other player in Gettysburg's storied history.
 
Mulvihill tallied four goals and three ground balls for the Cardinals. Ian Evans produced a goal and three assists, while Miller and Depetres each scored a pair of goals. Kyle O'Dea recorded five ground balls and six caused turnovers. Face-off specialist Joe Post went 17-of-26 and scooped 14 ground balls.
