Softball Shuts Out Swarthmore Twice

Sophomore Sophie Chong and freshman Cora Bridgers combined for 11 strikeouts, leading the Muhlenberg softball team to 7-0 and 2-0 wins over Swarthmore.

Chong, the reigning CC pitcher of the week, picked up her sixth win of the year in game one, doubling her total from all of last season. She worked herself out of a couple of situations with two runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, the sophomore struck out the fourth Garnet batter of the inning looking before getting some help from junior Sarah Schubert with a diving catch in shallow left field for the third out. In the sixth, Chong escaped unscathed with a strikeout swinging.

Bridgers followed with a seven-strikeout effort in the nightcap. She retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to close out her ninth win of the season, the most by any Mule freshman since 2012.

Freshman Sarah Karmazyn (pictured above) beat the throw home when the Garnet (10-8, 0-2 CC) tried to complete a double play on a slow-rolling Kristy Selby ground out in the bottom of the first. Two innings late, the frosh sent a bloop single over the head of the leaping first baseman to score classmate Kristin Oberg for a 2-0 Muhlenberg lead.

A four-run bottom of the fourth broke the game open for the Mules. After senior Kristina Qualben scored on an overthrow to home on a Schubert fielder's choice, Oberg smoked a line drive triple to the fence in right center to score two runs. Oberg was then brought home on a sac bunt by classmate Sarah Raab.

Qualben sent a two-run home run to dead center in the bottom of the first inning of game two. The bomb was her fourth of the season and the 16th of her career.  She leads the Mules with 14 extra-base hits.

Muhlenberg has six shutouts this season, the most since posting nine in 2014. That same year was the last time Muhlenberg shut out an opponent in both ends of a twinbill, when it topped Ursinus 2-0 and 9-0.
