• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball season came to an end as the Blue Jays fell to Scranton, 59-46 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night.
How it Happened
• The Lady Royals pulled out to a 6-2 lead at 6:40 but back-to-back layups from
Rory Cole and
Lillian Scott tied the game at six. A three from Emily Sheehan put Scranton up 11-8 and after two free throws from Scott got Hopkins to within one, Bridgette Mann hit a three to put the home team up 14-10 with 2:10 remaining. Scott hit a layup as time expired in the quarter to make the score 16-12 after 10 minutes of play.
• A Makenzie Mason three gave Scranton a 10-point lead at 8:21 and another three at 6:04 made the score 25-13. Cole got JHU back to within 10 with a layup at 5:43. Later in the quarter Cole hit two free throws to get Johns Hopkins to within seven, 27-20, at 2:30, but a 4-0 Scranton run made it a 31-20 game with 1:13 remaining in the half and the Lady Royals would take a 34-23 lead into the halftime break.

Lexie Scholtz hit two free throws early in the third to get the Blue Jays back to within single digits as she made the score 34-25 at 9:31. Scholtz once again cut the Scranton lead to single digits with a layup at 3:53 which made the score 39-30. The Lady Royals responded with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 46-32 with two minutes remaining and they headed into the game's final quarter with a 46-34 advantage.
• The Blue Jays opened the fourth on a 6-0 run as a Scott layup made the score 46-40 with 8:05 remaining. Mason then drilled a three for the Royals to make the score 49-40 but Scott once again came down the court for the layup to make it a 49-42 game. Scranton responded with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 55-42 with 3:337 left in the contest but Scott converted two free throws to make the score 55-44 with 1:53 left in the game. Hopkins would not be able to get much closer as Scranton held on to take the 59-46 victory and advance to next weekend's Sweet 16 game.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays are 1-4 against the Royals and Scranton has won the last two meetings. The Royals are now 3-0 against Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament.
• The 23 wins came two victories short of the program record of 25, and the five losses are the fewest since 2011-12 when the team finished 24-5.
• Four of the five Blue Jay losses came to NCAA Tournament teams and the other came to Marymount who finished the season 22-5 .

• Scott finished with a game-high 20 points with four rebounds while Scholtz added 10 and pulled down six rebounds.
• Cole finished one-point shy of the double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds and added nine points in the game.
