Gophers Drop Decision to McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Host McDaniel College trailed just once in the early going as it eased to a 81-41 non-conference women's basketball victory over Goucher College at the Gill Center Saturday afternoon.
- Goucher (2-7) led 3-2 29 seconds into the game following a three-pointer by Kyla Smith (Easton, Pa./Easton).
- McDaniel (4-5) took the lead back on a putback on its next possession and stretched the lead to 10-5.
- The Gophers cut it back to one, 10-9, at the 5:29 mark on two free throws by Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit).
- The Green Terror held their guests scoreless for the rest of the half as they built a 23-10 advantage.
- A basket by Julia Cavoli (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin 2:10 into the second halted a 15-0 McDaniel run.
- McDaniel scored seven straight points before a layup by Kendra Lawrence (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) with 2:55 left before intermission made it 36-16.
- The guests closed the first half on a 13-6 run and led 49-22 at intermission.
- Goucher scored the first four points of the second half, with a basket by GVahn Pace (Akron, Ohio/East) at 7:25 making it 49-26.
- A Smith basket with 6:13 to go in the quarter cut the McDaniel lead to 21, 51-30.
- The Green Terror outscored the Gophers 12-1 the rest of the quarter and led 63-31 through three.
- Goucher and McDaniel traded baskets at the start of the fourth, with a Quarles layup with 8:12 to go making it 68-35.
- The Green Terror had the game's final five points.
- Smith and Lawrence each finished in double figures for Goucher, recording 11 and 10 points, respectively.
- Smith had five rebounds and a pair of steals, while Lawrence grabbed seven rebounds.
- Quarles finished 3-4 from the floor and 2-2 at the free throw line and totaled eight points and eight rebounds.
- Goucher shot 32.6% for the game and was 10-14 at the free throw line while going 1-6 behind the arc.
- McDaniel shot 42% overall and was 7-24 from long range and 12-18 at the stripe.
- The Green Terror held a 50-30 rebounding advantage and 23 offensive rebounds led to a 21-5 lead in second chance points.
- Goucher continues its road swing next Saturday when it makes the short jaunt to Notre Dame of Maryland for a noon tipoff against the Gators.
- The Gophers are back home Tuesday, January 10 when they host Catholic in a 7 pm Landmark Conference game at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
