BALTIMORE, Md. – All good things come to an end and for the Gettysburg College women's tennis, that end came in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Championship as host and 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins University came away with a 5-0 victory on Saturday.
Making its first appearance in the CC semifinals, Gettysburg (12-8) wasn't able to take down the 12-time defending champs as Johns Hopkins (16-3) marched on to the championship game for the 13th-consecutive campaign. The Blue Jays swept doubles play with Gettysburg's senior tandem of
Maddie Class (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Maria Martinovic (Lawrence Township, N.J./Princeton Day School) closing their collegiate careers with an 8-3 setback at No. 2.
Johns Hopkins sealed the victory with two 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at second and sixth singles. The teams did not finish out singles play with the team outcome already decided.
Gettysburg closed the campaign with its best win total in 21 years. The Bullets made their first postseason appearance of any kind in three decades and scored the program's first victory with a 5-4 decision over Franklin & Marshall College in the first round.
Individually, Class and Martinovic ended their collegiate careers on high notes. Class won a combined 23 matches this season and finished with 40 total wins in her career. Martinovic finished fifth in program history with 68 total wins with 34 each in singles and doubles play. She is tied for fifth at Gettysburg in career doubles victories.
