Murphy's Gem Leads Baseball to Split with Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, MD. - A complete game from Casey Murphy led Ursinus College baseball to a doubleheader split with Washington College on Sunday afternoon from Athey Park. The Bears dropped game one 12-4 but used a 4-1 decision in game two to salvage the series split.  

Game One: Ursinus 4 Washington 12 

The Shoremen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first after a double to left field from Joe Curtin scoring two. In the third inning, Curtin came through again driving in a run after a single to left field scored Noah Iseman from second. The Bears answered back with a run in the fourth after Nick Diaz drove a line drive into right center scoring Dylan Crammer from first. In the bottom half of the inning, Washington's Mike Bukowski lifted a homerun to left field to make the score 4-1. The Shoremen added four more runs in the fifth inning which all came with two outs. Three straight free passes and a hit by pitch led to the Shoremen's first run. While a wild pitch and a single brought in three more to make the score 9-1. In the sixth inning, Dylan Crammer blasted his third career homerun to make the score 9-2. Later in the inning, Solomon Griffith scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to six. Matteo Falcone added a double in the ninth inning, scoring both Tim Pyne and Jared Minichbach to make the score 12-4.  

Game Two: Ursinus 4 Washington 1 

Murphy turned in an absolute gem in game two, pitching a complete game while just allowing four hits, one run and fanning eight batters. The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Minnichbach drove a single through the left side scoring Crammer from second. In the second inning, the Shoremen were able to get the tying run to third with just one out, but Murphy escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.  

Ursinus added two insurance runs in the third inning, after Minnichbach drove another single into left field scoring Crammer from second. With two outs, the Bears used a double from Peter Balos to plate Minnichbach for a 3-0 lead. With the lead, Murphy started to settle in on the mound retiring the next nine batters he faced, before Washington was able to scratch across a run in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Murphy retired the side in order after two pop outs and a strikeout closed out the inning.  

The junior righty closed out the final two innings on the mound, only allowing one hit while picking up his second complete game of the season and earning his fourth win. Crammer led the Bears at the plate going 4 for 5 with 1 RBI while Minnichbach added two hits and earned two RBI's.  

The Bears will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Haverford for a 3:30 start.
