Blue Jays Drop a Pair of Centennial Conference Duals

Wertheimer Sets School Record With 14th Pin of the Season

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference dual meets on Saturday afternoon at Ursinus as the Blue Jays fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (32-9) and the host Bears (33-18).  With the losses, the Blue Jays slip to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial.

Against the Mariners
The Blue Jays trailed just 14-9 after splitting the first six bouts, but the Mariners claimed wins by decision at 174 and 184 and added forfeit wins at 197 and 285 to account for the 32-9 final score.

The Blue Jays got a 9-2 win from freshman Brent Lorin at 125, a 5-2 win from sophomore Jared Osborne at 149 and Dominick Reyes grabbed a 10-8 victory at 165.

Against the Bears
The match began at 157 and the Blue Jays led 12-8 after Reyes and senior Nathan Wertheimer picked up pins at 165 and 184, respectively, but the Bears reeled off five straight wins, including two majors, a technical fall, a pin and a forfeit to turn the 12-8 deficit into a 33-12 lead.  Osborne picked up a win by forfeit at 149 to close the match and account for the 33-18 final score.

Record-Breaking
Wertheimer pinned the Bears' Kyle Schaffer in 2:30 to secure his school-record 14th pin of the season.  The previous Johns Hopkins single-season record for pins (13) had been set by Reyes during the 2017-18 season.  The pin was also the 23rd of Wertheimer's career.

Streaking
With his two wins on the day, Reyes ran his winning streak to 16 and improved to 25-2 on the year and 78-24 in his career.

Notes of Interest
Reyes' first-period pin of Alex Koenig of Ursinus (2:34) was his 10th pin of the season and the 28th of his career.  He is just the third wrestler in school history with 10 or more pins in two different seasons (Eric Fishel (2004-08), Ricky Cavallo (2015-19) • With two more pins on the day, Johns Hopkins now has 60 wins by fall on the year, including 30 that have come in the first period.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will close out the dual-meet portion of its 2019-20 schedule with matches against Washington & Lee and Muhlenberg on Saturday, February 8.  Those duals will take place at McDaniel.
