Men's Soccer Plays to Draw at Wilkes, 1-1

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.. - Taking to the road for the first time on the young season, the Haverford College Men's Soccer team (1-0-1) played to a 1-1 draw with the host Colonels of Wilkes (1-0-1) in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts started the contest with a flurry of shots, with Dylan Ioffreda called into action almost immediately for three big saves in the first six minutes of play. Haverford responded with shots from Liam O'Malley in the 10th minute and Paul-Andre Coulibaly in the 17th, as the latter shot was cleared off the back line by a defender in what was Haverford's best scoring chance to that point. The sides went into the halftime intermission scoreless, and out of the halftime gates, Ioffreda was again called into work to stop shots from Matthew Horwedel in the 47th and 51st minute. Colin Schulmeister grabbed a shot on frame in the 57th, but Ioffreda was again up to the challenge, denying Wilkes the opening tally.

Herbert Ramirez eventually opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, taking a feed from Horwedel for the Colonels' opening strike, but the Fords had an answer in the 77th, with Coulibaly sending a salvo into the box that was deflected by Andrew Fritz and buried home to equalize in the latter stages of the contest.  On the next offensive chance for the Fords, it was again Coulibaly there to put a strong attempt on frame, but the Wilkes keeper Zach Tone did well to keep Haverford off the scoreboard for the rest of the period. Andrew Stephens had an excellent chance as he connected off the right post in the 87th, and Tomas Ascoli added a last-ditch shot with just four ticks left on the regulation clock.

Wilkes held a slight edge in shots overall at 19-12 on the afternoon. Fritz and Coulibaly each had two shots on goal to pace Haverford, while O'Malley and Luca Mello finished with one, a screamer that was punched over the bar by the Wilkes keeper with less than three minutes remaning in the first half. Ioffreda was again a standout with nine saves on the 19 shots he faced.

The Fords now head out for another midweek test against Rowan on Wednesday, September 7. The contest is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Glassboro, N.J. as the Fords leave the state of Pennsylvania for the first time in 2022.
