Early Surge Powers York Past Johns Hopkins, 33-11

Paul, Walnoha, Dunn Score Blue Jay Victories

YORK, PA – The York College wrestling team won the first six bouts to jump out to a 27-0 lead and the Spartans went on to a 33-11 non-conference victory over visiting Johns Hopkins Friday evening in the Grumbacher Center.  The Spartans improve to 3-6 on the year, while the Blue Jays slip to 2-4.

Where the Match Was Won
York's Jared Kuhns won the featured matchup on the evening with a 10-6 match-opening win against the Blue Jays' Brent Lorin. Leading 3-0 after Kuhns' win, the Spartans reeled off four straight bonus-point victories, including two pins, one technical fall and one major decision, to push out to the insurmountable 27-0 lead with four bouts remaining.

Hopkins Wins Three of Final Four
Johns Hopkins picked up wins at 174, 184 and 285 to account for the 33-11 final score.  Among the three wins were one technical fall and two wins by decision.

Senior Joe Paul continued his hot streak with a 25-10 technical fall victory at 174 to get the Blue Jays on the board.  Paul used 12 takedowns and a point of riding time to knock off Kyle Strazdus; five of the takedowns came in the third period after Paul had built a 14-5 lead entering the final period.

Junior Grant Walnoha followed Paul with a 5-3 win at 184 and sophomore Jack Dunn grabbed a 9-5 win at 285 to account for the other two Blue Jay victories on the night.

Notes of Interest
Paul ran his winning streak to 10 and improved to 25-6 on the year; his 25 wins are a team-high.  The technical fall victory for Paul was also his seventh of the season, which leaves him just one shy of Ricky Cavallo's JHU single-season record of (2017-18).  Wrestling a weight class up, Walnoha won for the fourth straight time and the fifth time in his last six matches.  Dunn, who joined the team after playing football for Johns Hopkins in the fall, won his second straight and for the third time in his last four matches.

What's Next

Johns Hopkins will return to action tomorrow (January 29) as the Blue Jays will make the trip to Ursinus for a Centennial quad against the host Bears, Muhlenberg and the Merchant Marine Academy.
