A gold-medal run by Muhlenberg freshman
Sam Morgan in the 800 highlighted the final day of the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The meet was a good one overall for both Mule teams, who posted outstanding performances whether competing in warmth and sunshine (Saturday) or chill and rain (Sunday). Of the 38 athletes who competed in open events, 24 posted personal bests over the course of the three-day meet.
The top performance was by Morgan, who became the first freshmen on the Muhlenberg men's team to win a gold medal in an open track event since 2007. His time of 1:54.17 was more than a full second better than the PR of 1:55.30 he set while winning his qualifying heat.Â
Morgan was third behind runners from McDaniel and Johns Hopkins after one lap. He overtook the Hopkins runner with about 150 meters to go and surged past the McDaniel competitor on the final straightaway to win going away.
Sophomore
Luke Ullmann was similarly impressive in the same race, finishing fourth in 1:55.33, a big improvement from his previous best of 1:56.91. Morgan and Ullmann now sit seventh and eighth, respectively, on the all-time performance list.
Senior
Corey Mullins won the Mules' first medal of the final day, holding off a Dickinson runner down the stretch to earn silver in the 1500. It was his second career silver to go along with a gold and a bronze; he improved from sixth place as a sophomore to third place last year to second this season.
Two other Mules earned medals on the final day, with freshman
Corrin Ferrizzi notching her second medal of the meet, a bronze in the triple jump (she won silver in the long jump on Saturday), and junior
Kem Montina winning bronze in the 400 hurdles for the second straight year.
In addition to Ullmann, freshman
Megan Kveragas (javelin) and junior
Cameron Ford (triple jump) narrowly missed medals, placing fourth. Ford's PR of 43-2¼ put him in ninth place on the performance list.
Freshman
Kayleigh Durning entered the performance list in 10th place after coming in fifth in the 100 hurdles.
