Women's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with 2OT Win over Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Hannah Friedrich secured her eighth shutout of the season as the Haverford College women's soccer team (8-7-2, 5-4-1) earned a 1-0 victory over Swarthmore (9-4-2, 6-3-1) at Walton Field, as the Fords left the Garnet scoreless in an evenly matched contest that went to double overtime on Senior Day. Haverford secured a crucial Hood Trophy point in the contest, as Haverford leads Swarthmore 4-2 in the tally with the fall matchups complete.

Prior to kickoff, the Fords honored the program's 10 seniors: Gabrielle Cipriano, Jaclyn Corbin, Elle Ferreira, Hannah Friedrich, Sidney Hwang, Morrea Morrison, Karlie Pollock, Julie Rebh, Mia Reyes, and Rachel White. That grouping of 10 seniors helped earn Centennial Conference playoff appearances in each of their first two seasons on campus, and an NCAA tournament berth during the 2019 campaign. Perhaps most impressively, they have been academic standouts, routinely leading the Centennial Conference in honor roll recipients and posting the third-best GPA in Division III last academic year.

Seniors were called upon early and often in the contest as Friedrich made the first save of the game in the third minute. For how stellar the captain has been in goal this season, it was an easy save by her standards. Overall, Friedrich finished the game with seven saves.  Swarthmore had another attempt in the 17th minute, but it missed wide.

Not to be outdone in the first half, Haverford got their first shot of the game in the 26th minute from Grace Haskell. Haskell put her shot on target, but Swarthmore goalkeeper Nora Greer made the glove save. Friedrich was called into action once again in the 34th minute as she saved a low-driven shot from a Garnet forward. The last action of the first half was denied by Friedrich as she dove to make a save in the 45th minute.

The second half opened with Karlie Pollock getting a shot on target, forcing the Swarthmore goalkeeper into a save. The two rivals would continue to trade shot attempts throughout the second half. After being outshot 5-1 by Swarthmore in the first half, Haverford tallied five shots in the second half. Despite the unloading of shots, the end of regulation came with no goals scored by either team.

In the overtime periods, Haverford looked to get a hold of the game and were the aggressors. It took until the final two minutes for the Fords to bring the game to a close. After a foul was called on Swarthmore in the box, the Fords were awarded a penalty kick in the 108th minute. Alyssa Saito stepped up to the spot and fired her attempt right down the middle for the game-winning goal. It was her second goal of the season, setting off a raucous celebration on the field and in the packed bleachers.

Celia Page had a game-high three shots while Jaclyn Corbin tallied two shots on frame. Kim Kockenmeister had three shots on goal for the visitors. Haverford improves to 19-15-6 all-time against the Garnet. The victory was Haverford's first over Swarthmore since the 2013 season.
