Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Opens with Win

Sophomore Mikaela McGarvey scored a career-high 24 points to lead the hot-shooting Muhlenberg women's basketball team to an 80-66 season-opening win at Salisbury.

The Mules shot 59.5 percent from the field to reach the 80-point mark - something they did once all last year - in their first game of the season.

McGarvey (pictured above) was 8-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, to lead a deep and productive Muhlenberg bench. The Mules' nine reserves combined to scored 52 of their 80 points, while the Sea Gulls played only eight players and got just seven points from their bench.

Freshman Sara Peretti scored 13 points in just 11 minutes in her collegiate debut, and seniors Ashley Polera (11) and Emily O'Mahoney (10) also finished with double figures in points.

Muhlenberg led by as many as seven points in the first half, but Salisbury came back to take a 43-38 edge midway through the third quarter. McGarvey flipped the game around by netting the final eight points of the quarter, hitting back-to-back threes and knocking down a pair of free throws, to send the Mules into the final period with a 54-48 lead.

McGarvey, whose previous best was 22 points, picked up where the left off in the fourth, completing her personal 10-0 run with a layup off a pass from Peretti on the first possession.

A jumper by O'Mahoney made it 58-48, giving the Mules' their first double-digit lead, and the margin swelled to as many as 17 points.

Senior Madison Kirchofer finished with 7 points and a team-leading 6 rebounds, and freshman Kassidy Stout pulled down 5 boards to go along with a pair of assists in her first game.
