MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) struck out a career-high 10 to lead Gettysburg College past Lycoming College 3-2 at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic on Thursday. The Bullets dropped the second game of the day 2-0 to the College of St. Scholastica.
Gettysburg (3-7) jumped on the board early against Lycoming (1-4). Sophomore
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) led off the second inning with a single, stole second base, and came around to score on a base hit up the middle by classmate
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo).
A lead-off hit led to another run in the bottom of the third. Junior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) hit a shot down the left-field line for a double and senior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) scored the pinch-runner with a single to left-center.
Clauser was dealing early with five strikeouts in the first two frames. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Warriors in the third, but the junior hurler froze the final hitter on a called third strike to escape the jam.
Lycoming tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Madison Brown hit a one-out single and scored on Ashley Schoenstadt's triple to right-center. Schoenstadt came all the way around to score on an error by the Bullets.
The Bullets came through with the game-winning run in their final at bat. Folfas tallied her second hit of the day and reached third base on an error by the left fielder. Julie plated the senior with an infield single to second base.
Lycoming put a pair of runners on base in the seventh inning, but Clauser shut the door with her final strikeout.
Clauser allowed two runs, five hits, and six walks on the way to the victory. Folfas, Julie, and sophomore
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each went 2-for-3.
Gettysburg was unable to get a runner home in the second game against St. Scholastica (6-9). The Bullets put runners in scoring position in four different innings, including loading the bases in the top of the first. A double play started by the pitcher with a toss to home wiped out the threat and kept the Orange and Blue off the board.
The Saints scored in their opening at bat and added an insurance run in the fifth.
Senior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took the loss after allowing five hits and one run, while striking out four. Sophomore
McKenzie Somers (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) gave up a run and struck out four in the final two innings.
Sophomore
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) went 2-for-3.
Gettysburg wraps up its spring break trip with a doubleheader at No. 12 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday beginning at noon.
