Wrestling Battles on Senior Night

In a closely contested match with a great atmosphere in Memorial Hall, the Muhlenberg wrestling team fell to Ursinus, 19-13, on Senior Night.

Members of the Muhlenberg football and men's lacrosse teams brought the energy in the stands and had many moments to cheer about, in spite of the final result. Every bout went the full seven minutes, with the three major decisions all coming by eight points.

After regionally ranked Bear wrestlers won the first two bouts, the Mules tied the score with wins by a pair of athletes who showed the program's depth.

At 141, sophomore Christopher Dalmau, wrestling in a dual match for just the second time, scored a 7-3 decision. The bout was tied 2-2 in the third period before Dalmau recorded a pair of takedowns.

Dalmau had more experience than the next Muhlenberg wrestler, freshman Brandon Bowles, who was competing in his first bout of the season against the fifth-ranked 149-pounder in the Mideast Region. Bowles was trailing 3-2 on the scoreboard, but with an advantage in riding time that effectively made it a tie, when he took his opponent down with 20 seconds left in the third period for a 5-3 win.

The Mules (10-7, 2-1) took their first lead when freshman Anson Dewar scored a 9-1 major decision for his 20th win of the season. Dewar secured the major by taking his opponent down with 11 seconds left in the third period.

Ursinus (6-4, 5-1) won the next three bouts to go back ahead, 16-10, heading into the final two bouts.

Senior Luca Colestock gave Muhlenberg a chance with a 3-1 decision in a rematch of the 2020 Centennial Conference final. The difference was a takedown in the closing seconds of the second period.

That made the score 16-13, but the Bears clinched the match with a major decision at heavyweight. The result snapped Muhlenberg's eight-match CC dual winning streak.

Prior to the match, Muhlenberg honored seniors Angelo Mahaffey, Billy Moore, Scott Horry, Matt Ferrante, Ramiro Osuna, Yonbüe Goodall-Tanco, Nick Cope, Colestock and Greg Baum (pictured left to right, above).
