ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - McDaniel College wrestling freshman
Thomas Monn remained undefeated, posting a 4-0 record en route to winning the 149-pound championship at the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown Saturday.
Led by Monn and a second-place finish by junior
Jaedyn Harris at 197 pounds, the Green Terror finished fifth out of nine teams with 96.0 points. Elizabethtown finished first with 172.0 points while Roanoke came in second with 168.0.
The top-seed at 149 pounds, Monn improved his record to 11-0 this season with two falls and two decisions. He began his day with a pin over Jon Peng of Johns Hopkins in 1:10 before recording a fall against Davis & Elkins' Corbin Saul in 4:15 in the quarterfinals.
Monn posted a 9-3 decision over Roanoke's Jarrod Pominville in the semifinals and won his second tournament championship of the season with a 3-2 victory over Johns Hopkins' Connor Powell. Monn also finished first at the Messiah Invitational on Nov. 5.
Monn is currently ranked 13th in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and 14th by The Open Mat.
Harris finished second at 197 pounds after falling to Cameron Butka of Wilkes in the championship, 6-4 in the first sudden victory period. Butka is currently ranked 13th nationally by both the NWCA and The Open Mat. It was just the second loss in 11 matches for Harris this season. He also finished second at the Messiah Invitational.
Harris won the first meeting against Butka in the Dr. Sam Case Duals on Nov. 20 with a fall in the first sudden victory period.
To advance to the title match, Harris posted a tech fall over Keystone's Nero Bono, 18-2 (3:56), and a major decision, 15-4 over Hunter Lowe of Wilkes.
Senior
Michael Bromley and sophomore
Xavier Howard each posted fourth-place finishes at 174 and 157 pounds, respectively. Bromley won by fall in just 53 seconds over Tyler Rozanski of Keystone before posting an 8-4 decision against Elizabethtown's Ganon Smith in the quarterfinals. He was edged by Joe Paul from Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, 5-3.
In the consolation bracket, Bromley pinned Roanoke's Kyle Lee in 5:00, but fell to Wilkes' James Geiger in the third-place match, 3-1. Geiger also edged out a 4-3 decision over Bromley at the Dr. Sam Case Duals.
Like Bromley, Howard also went 3-2, posting two wins by decision in the championship bracket before falling to Elizabethtown's Dorian Gonzalez, 5-3, in the semifinals. After a win by decision, 9-4 over Wiley Houser of Davis & Elkins in the consolation semifinals, Howard was pinned by Scranton's Daniel Kosinski in the third-place match.
Making his season debut, sophomore
Val Pryor also went 3-2 at 184 pounds, posting three-straight wins in the consolation bracket, including one by major decision over Wilkes' Alexis Perez, before he was pinned by Christopher Nuss of Wilkes in the consolation semifinals.
Sophomore
Austin Stewart earned the first three wins of his career, posting a 3-2 record at heavyweight, including his first career fall over Scranton's Christian Gillich in 2:06.
The Green Terror return to action in two weeks at the Chocolate Duals hosted by Messiah on Saturday, Dec. 17. Competition gets underway at 10 a.m.
