Baseball Drops Contest to McDaniel

Green Terror top Bullets 7-2

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team was upended 7-2 by visiting McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference match up at Kirchhoff Field Tuesday.

Gettysburg (15-18, 4-11 CC) was led by freshman Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and junior Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) who each went 3-for-5. Junior Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) went 2-for-4 and plated both runs with a double in the sixth inning.

Zach Fortuna went the distance for McDaniel (11-20-1, 3-12 CC), allowing two runs and 11 hits, while striking out six. The Green Terror outfield provided most of the offensive production as Julian Jenkins, DJ Biscoe, and Tim Griest went a combined 10-for-14 with six runs and five RBI.

Hitting second and third in the order, Jenkins and Biscoe accounted for each of McDaniel's first four runs. The duo pulled off a double steal in the first inning to plate the first tally, while Biscoe scored Jenkins with a double to left field in the third inning. Jenkins stroked a two-out triple to center field in the fifth inning and came around to score on a double to left by Biscoe, who in turn touched the plate on a single through the left side by Griest to make it 4-0.

After managing to put just one runner in scoring position through the first five frames, the Gettysburg bats came alive in the sixth. Sophomore Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) led off the inning with a single to right-center, marking his 38th consecutive game reaching base safely. Two batters later, freshman Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College) beat out a dribbler to the right side of the infield to put runners on first and second with one out.

Murphy advanced to third on a fly out to center field and Augustus put the Bullets on the board with a two-out double to left field.

Gettysburg continued to build momentum in the following inning and loaded the bases with consecutive singles by freshman Matthew Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames), Decker, and LaCoe. A fly out to shallow center field kept the runners where they were and Fortuna appeared to be on his last batter with action in the bullpen. The McDaniel hurler was helped out by his defense as Jacob Pezzano stopped a sharp grounder by freshman Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) to start an inning-ending double play.

Fortuna retired eight of the final nine batters he faced, allowing only a two-out single by Decker in the ninth inning.

The Green Terror tacked on an unearned run in the seventh inning and two more runs in the ninth on a double by Biscoe and a single by Griest to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) was saddled with the loss for Gettysburg. Burbank allowed four runs and nine hits, while striking out a career-high five.

Gettysburg completes its series with McDaniel Friday at 3:30 in Westminster, Md.
