Field Hockey Upended at Ursinus

Bullets five-game win streak ends with 3-1 setback

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.The Gettysburg College field hockey team saw its five-game win streak come to a close with a 3-1 setback at Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon at Snell Field.

Ursinus (5-2, 3-0 CC) struck first as Gabriela Howell's first attempt at the cage was denied by Gettysburg (5-2, 2-1 CC) goalie Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township), but Howell recovered the loose ball and slipped it to Gemma Dufoe for the opening score at 7:45.

It wasn't long before the Orange and Blue hit pay-dirt, capitalizing on their own rebound in front of the cage. Sophomore Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), who scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bears last fall, hit a backhanded blast off a save in the 13th minute to tie the score.

That would be the extent of the scoring in the opening period as Caputo posted three more saves to preserve the deadlock.

Senior Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) kept Ursinus off the board early in the final period with a defensive save on a shot by Erin Saybolt in the 40th minute. Saybolt would get her goal later in the half, knocking in her own rebound for a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute.

Howell capped the scoring with an insurance goal with less than five minutes left.

Ursinus posted a 13-7 lead in shots and a 6-3 lead in penalty corners.

The Bullets return to action with a non-conference contest at Stevenson University on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
