Hopkins Slips Past Mary Washington, 50-47

JHU won the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament, Hosted by Mary Washington

The Basics 
• Score: JHU - 50, Mary Washington - 47
• Records: Hopkins (3-0) • Mary Washington (1-2)

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball edged Mary Washington, 50-47 in the championship game of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Rory Cole grabbed 17 rebounds in the game as she was named MVP of the tournament.  

How it Happened
• JHU opened up an eight-point lead in the first quarter on a three from Madison McGrath as Hopkins controlled most of the first 10 minutes of action and took a 12-8 lead into the second quarter.
• Freshman Erin Walsh converted on a layup at 8:09 in the second quarter to make the score 16-9 in favor of JHU. The Eagles cut the Hopkins' lead to five with a layup but Lexie Scholtz drilled a three to put the Blue Jays back up eight as JHU took a 25-15 lead into the half with Scholtz hitting a jumper as time expired.
• A three from Scholtz gave Hopkins its largest lead of the day at 6:47 in the third as her shot made the score 35-17.
• Mary Washington went on a 6-0 run to make the score 35-23, but a jumper from Diarra Oden stopped the Eagles' run and made the score 37-23.
• Emily Shively hit a three for MW with three seconds remaining in the quarter and the teams went into the final quarter of play with Hopkins leading 43-31.
• Mary Washington came back in the final 10 minutes of play as a jumper from Emily Thompson cut the JHU lead to five at 45-40 with 1:29 remaining. The Eagles got to within three on two free throws from Jordan Pamlanye, and a three from Thompson with nine seconds remaining made the score 50-47. Cole grabbed arguably her biggest rebound of the game as she got the offensive board off a missed JHU free throw to seal the win for the Blue Jays.   

What it Means
• This is the first time since 2011-12 that the Blue Jays have opened the season 3-0.
• JHU is now 1-3 all-time against the Eagles as this marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2009.

Inside the Box Score
• Cole grabbed 17 rebounds and Scholtz, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored a game-high 22 points.
• McGrath added 17 points as she went 3-4 from deep.
• JHU out-rebounded Mary Washington, 43-33.

• JHU will play its home opener on Tuesday, November 20 at 6pm against McDaniel.
