PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Swarthmore College Baseball completed its spring break trip in Florida with convincing wins over Arcadia and Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon. The Garnet went 7-3 on their season-opening trip, a two-win improvement from the 10 games they played to begin their record-setting season in 2018.
Junior
Jared Gillen had a monster day, compiling six hits over the two games including a home run, double, five RBIs and six runs scored.
Junior
Sawyer Lake threw a complete-game gem in Game 2, striking out 10 while allowing just two hits.
Swarthmore averaged 12.4 runs over the 10 games in Florida. Four Swarthmore players (minimum 30 at bats) are currently batting over .400: juniors
Holden Bridge (.565),
Jared Gillen (.426), and
Cole Beeker (.462) as well as senior
Charles Levitt (.426).
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 13, Arcadia 7
Swarthmore opened up the floodgates early in this one, scoring six in the second inning on hits from Gillen, Beeker, junior
Terell Dale, and senior
Jackson Roberts. Those four all drove in at least two runners in the win as they combined for all 13 of Swarthmore's RBIs.
Bridge stayed red hot, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Bridge is 26-for-46 this season with a hit in all 10 of Swarthmore's games.
Senior
Ricky Conti got the start for Swarthmore and improved to 2-0 on the season. Senior
Charles Groppe pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one base runner on a walk.
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 12, Ohio Wesleyan 0
The Garnet struck early again in Game 2, scoring three, two and two in the first three innings, respectively. Their bats went silent over the next four innings, but they sealed they easy win for Lake with a five spot in the eighth.
Levitt led Swarthmore with three hits in the blowout. Gillen, Beeker, Bridge, sophomore
Sam Jacobson and freshman
Luke Mutz all added two.
Eight different Garnet players had an RBI.
The next game on Swarthmore's schedule is slated for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Widener at Clothier Field.
