Barr, Stokes Light Up Haverford

No. 2 Gettysburg races past Fords 20-10

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) piled up a career-high 13 points and sophomore Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) scored a personal-best seven goals as second-ranked Gettysburg College surged past Haverford College in the second half for a 20-10 victory in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (11-1, 4-1 CC) scored 20 goals for the second game in a row and for the third time this season. The Bullets trailed 3-1 before a 7-0 run spanning the two periods and put up 15 goals in the second half at Haverford (6-6, 1-4 CC).

Barr finished one point shy of the program record held by Amanda Carroon '86 with six goals and seven assists. She tied her personal highs for goals and assists, the latter also tying Gettysburg's single-game mark. Stokes more than doubled her previous career best for goals and topped her career high for points by two.

Sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) went over 100 draw controls in her career with eight on Saturday and added two goals, two assists, and three ground balls. Junior Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) posted two goals, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers, while classmate Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tallied six draw controls.

Senior goalie Bailey Pilder (Rowayton, Conn./New Canaan) stopped 11 shots and picked up four ground balls for Gettysburg. Junior Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford) came up with two caused turnovers and four draw controls.

Allie Gibbons led Haverford with five goals and Julia Manetta dished out for assists. Hailey Morris contributed two goals and two assists. Goalie Amelia Slade posted 11 saves.

The Fords took control early with three of the first four goals of the game. The hosts scored two of their goals off Gettysburg turnovers with the third coming after winning the draw. Julia Pascarella put Haverford in front 3-1 with 15:33 to go in the first half.

A timeout by the Bullets ignited the attack as Barr came back a minute later with a free-position goal. The squad tacked on three more goals with the last coming from freshman Maddi Seibel (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School) on a free-position to give the visitors a 5-3 edge at the break.

The attack hit its stride quickly in the second stanza with Barr dishing out assists on a goal by senior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and back-to-back tallies by Stokes to make it 8-3 just 1:19 into the final half. Haverford tried to answer with two quick tallies from Gibbons and Maeve Gaffney, but the Bullets went on a 4-0 run, including back-to-back goals by McKeever eight seconds apart, to leap ahead 12-5 with 18:25 to play.

Barr and Stokes combined for each of the next seven goals for Gettysburg as the lead gradually reached double-figures. The duo went back-to-back twice to push it to a 10-goal margin late in the period, including at 19-9 with 3:19 to play.

Gettysburg finished with a 41-25 lead in shots, while Haverford led 16-14 in ground balls. The Bullets won the battle in the draw circle 19-12.
