Ursinus Holds Off Men’s Hoops

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Ursinus College drained 15 free throws in the second half, including six in the final minute to hold off the Gettysburg College men's basketball team in Centennial Conference action on Saturday inside Bream Gym 70-62.

Junior Andrew Gardiner (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Brentwood School) scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Bullets while junior Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) grabbed nine boards, two steals, and two blocks. Junior Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) dished out a team-best five assists.

Five players reached double-figures for Ursinus with George Gordon, Eric Williams Jr., and Ryan McTamney each netting 14 points. Ryan Hughes and Lucas Olshevski both contributed 11 points each. McTamney, the conference leading scorer, did damage on both ends of the floor today as he snagged a whopping 18 rebounds.

The Orange and Blue jumped to a quick start as Close hit a jumper and junior Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) drilled a trey in the first minute of the opening half. A layup by Duffey and a 3-pointer by Gardiner extended the Bullets lead 12-8 with 15:33 left.

After that, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead for the first time in the game to make it 15-12. The Bullets responded right back by outscoring the Bears 7-2 to retake the lead 19-17 with 9:14 on the clock.

The Burg went silent for the next several minutes as Ursinus went on another 7-0 run to take the 24-19 advantage with 2:13 to go in the opening half. A 3-pointer by Duffey at the 1:55 marker was the final basket scored by the Bullets as the Bears sank two free throws with 27 seconds left to head into intermission up 26-22.

The Bullets opened the second half with a trey from Lord, a layup from Gardiner, and a jumper from Antolini to tie the game at 29-29 with 16:54 remaining. Gettysburg would come within one point on two different occasions after that, but never led in the second half.

The Bears led by seven points with 5:10 to go, but the Bullets rallied by hitting back-to-back baskets, including a trey, to come within two (54-52) with 4:09 left. Ursinus maintained the advantage as they notched 16 points in the last three minutes, including eight from the charity stripe, to Gettysburg's nine, to seal the victory.

Ursinus made 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) from the field and Gettysburg finished the game 24-of-71 (33.8 percent). The Bears went 20-of-25 from the foul line and held the advantage in rebounds (47-38) and steals (7-4). The Bullets knocked down 10 three-pointers while the Bears tallied two from beyond the arc.

Gettysburg now takes a seven-day break from competition before traveling to Catholic University in a non-conference tilt Dec.16 at 3 p.m.
