HAVERFORD, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer ended the 2019 regular season on a high note, coming from behind to defeat rival Haverford College 3-1 on the road Saturday.
Swarthmore (12-5, 6-4 Centennial Conference) fell behind 1-0 to Haverford (12-3-1, 6-2-2 CC) after the Fords found the back of the net on a corner.
Swarthmore out-shot the Fords 8-4 in the first half, but really took it to the hosts in the second half, beleaguering the Haverford defense with 12 shots. The Garnet broke through in the 48th minute when Lizzie King slipped a pass through the back line and found Sophia Stills who cashed in for her fifth goal of the season.
The Garnet nearly made it 2-1 in the 62nd minute when senior Sydney Covitz had a shot stopped by the crossbar. But Swarthmore did finally take the lead in the 64th minute when King netted her fourth goal of the 2019 campaign.
Swarthmore put the game out of reach in the 80th minute when Brittany Weiderhold tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Chantal Reyes and Nora Greer split time in net and each recorded a save in their respective halves.
Now that the regular season is done, the Garnet cross their fingers at the outside chance of getting an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Swarthmore entered this weekend ranked ninth in the region by the NCAA while Haverford was ranked sixth. The Garnet also have a win this season over the region's fifth-ranked team, Stevens.
