Gettysburg, Pa. – Senior
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) recorded her second game-winner of the season to help the Gettysburg College women's soccer team earn its first Centennial Conference victory against McDaniel College in a thrilling 2-1 overtime match on Wednesday night at Clark Field.
This is the first time that the Bullets have defeated the Green Terror since the 2014 season.
Gettysburg has now gone into four overtime matches this season.
Throughout the first half, the Bullets had great looks at the net. Freshman
Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) had a breakaway shot that went wide, while freshman
Emma Bedell (Chatham, N.J./Mount Saint Mary) kicked a sharp ball that hit the top of the post, and junior
Charlotte Cenatiempo (Weston, Conn./Weston) found her way to the goal, but the goalkeeper saved it. The Bullets outshot Green Terror 11-2 in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, the Bullets finally connected on a shot. A free kick by Gettysburg moved the ball down to Miesemer on McDaniel's left side of the field, she finds Muskus inside the box and quickly taps the ball to senior
Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) who is having to battle a defender then kicks the ball as she is falling, in the middle of the net for an incredible goal.
McDaniel tied the match 19 minutes later as Megan Henderson shot the ball into the upper right corner of the net for the score.
The Bullets had five more shot opportunities in the final 22 minutes but was unable to capitalize on their shot opportunities, sending the game into overtime.
A few minutes into overtime, senior
Virginia Sanford (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School) crossed a pass from the right side of the field to the left side and found Miesemer close to the cage who blasted the shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Gettysburg outshot McDaniel by a whopping 22-7 and held the 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to action Saturday when it travels to Centennial Conference foe Ursinus starting at 5 p.m.
