Soares Scores as Bullets Blank Alvernia

Gettysburg wins third game in a row

READING, Pa.Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) scored for the second game in a row and the Bullets defense pitched its first shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Alvernia University in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday evening.

Coming off its biggest offensive output in two years, Gettysburg (3-1) needed just one goal to seal its third victory in a row. That opportunity came early in the second half when sophomore Arden Scheetz (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) slid a pass to Soares in the 41st minute. The junior found an opening around a diving goalie for her third goal in the last two outings. Scheetz picked up the assist, giving her a point in all four games this season for the Bullets.

The defense took care of the rest, holding Alvernia (1-4) to just 10 shots. Junior Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) stopped all eight shots she saw on goal, including the final attempt by Maria Panettieri in the 58th minute. It was the first shutout of Caputo's career.

Gettysburg held a 19-10 edge in shots, including 13-5 in the second half. The Bullets also took six of their game-high eight penalty corners in the second half.

The Orange and Blue open Centennial Conference play at home against Washington College this Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
