Gettysburg, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision in its Centennial Conference opener against Washington College on Saturday.
The match was the conference opener for both teams.
This is the first time in program history that the Shorewomen have defeated the Bullets.
Washington belted the first goal at the 9:10 marker and squeezed in another with 22 seconds left in the first half to take the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Bullets outshot the Shorewomen 10-4 in the opening frame. At the 20th minute, Gettysburg had a great opportunity to tie the match as senior
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) drilled a free kick that went high over the net.
In the 52nd minute, Miesemer passed the ball off to freshman
Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) who took a few dribbles and pounded the ball into the left of the net to put Gettysburg on the scoreboard.
The Bullets fought their way back and pulled even 24 minutes later as senior
Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) took advantage of the free kick, allowing freshmen
Kelly Gaudian (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) to head the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal.
The final goal of the match came at the 82nd minute when Washington's Emily Jacoby immediately passed the ball to Erin O'Reilly who quickly kicked the ball into the back of the net.
The Bullets outshot the Shorewomen 20-7 and held the slight edge in corner kicks 3-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of The Holy Angels) played all 90 minutes between the pipes and collected two saves.
Gettysburg resumes play on Wednesday, September 15, as they welcome Centennial Conference foe McDaniel College at 7 p.m.
