Men’s Basketball Drops Home Opener Against York

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's basketball team dropped an 89-71 decision against non-conference opponent York (Pa.) College in their home opener on Tuesday night in Bream Gym.

Junior Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) registered a strong all-around game with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three steals to lead the Bullets while sophomore Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) gathered 14 points.

Junior Andrew Gardiner (Los Angeles, Calif./Wesleyan University) also chipped in 13 points and six rebounds while sophomore Chris Jack (Reckange-sur-Mess, Luxembourg/The Hun School of Princeton) scored a career-high 11 points. The Bullets held the slight 42-41 edge in rebounds.

Jason Bady scored 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the Spartans, who have now won their first three games to open the season. Joey Polczynski added 16 points while Darin Gordon came off the bench to produce 15 points for York, who shot 47.1 percent from the field as a team.

York, the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference champs, jumped out on top in the opening half by going on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of action. However, freshman Jack Rooney (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) broke the Spartans run by knocking down back-to-back buckets for the Bullets to spark a 10-2 run. A 3-pointer by York's Darin Gordon extended the Spartans lead back to seven, 17-10, with 11:08 on the clock. Gettysburg then created a 6-2 run in the next minute and a half to trim the lead to three, 19-16.

The Spartans held on to a ten-point lead, 32-24, with 3:31 to go in the stanza, but Close netted four of the final eight points for the Bullets to only be down by four, 34-30, with 1:12 remaining. A jumper and a layup by York in the last 51 seconds increased the visitors lead 38-30 heading into halftime.

York's offense came out firing shots in the second half as they outscored Gettysburg 22-11 in the first seven minutes of the stanza. Back-to-back buckets from Rooney and Duffey made it 76-65 with 5:58 to go, but that's as close as the Bullets would get the rest of the way as the Spartans outscored Gettysburg 13-6 to end the game.

The Bullets continue their season this weekend when they host the 28th annual Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament. The Orange and Blue take on Ithaca College at 6 p.m. in their first-round game on Friday while Albright College and Randolph- Macon College follow at 8 p.m.
