The 23rd ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 56-52 decision at Johns Hopkins University on Thursday evening in Baltimore. The Eagles slip to 10-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the first quarter with the early advantage, taking an 9-3 lead in the opening minutes, led by six points from junior forward Jordan Carpenter. The Blue Jays went on a run, and tied the score at 13-13 with 2:37 left in the frame, and scored six of the final eight points to take a 19-15 lead to the second quarter.

After the teams traded points to open the second, UMW reeled off six straight points to regain the lead, at 25-24, with 4:03 left. The teams traded scores, and the score stood tied late, when Ashley Martin's last-second layup gave the Eagles a 31-29 lead at intermission.

In a low scoring third quarter, the score was tied on three occassions, with UMW carrying a single-possession lead in between. The matter was tied, 39-39, heading to the fourth quarter.

A jumper from sophomore Adeline Riner gave the Eagles the lead two minutes into the fourth, and a Martin free throw with 6:56 left pushed the lead to three. A jumper from Hopkins with 3:48 left gave the Blue Jays the lead, and UMW trailed by four until a three pointer from Elizabeth Dufrane cut the margin to one, at 50-49, with 59 seconds left. After a JHU basket, junior Keagan Schwab connected on a three pointer to knot the score at 52 with 27 seconds left. But the hosts made a basket and a pair of free throws down the stretch for the win.

Schwab and Carpenter led the Eagles with 13 points apiece, while Carpenter scored 10 points and added seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot 34.6% from the field (18-52), making 3-12 three point attempts and 13-17 free throws. Johns Hopkins shot 31.7% (19-60), making 3-17 three point tries and 15-25 free throws. JHU led in rebounds, 43-38, and both teams committed 19 turnovers.
