Women’s Soccer Battles No. 4 Johns Hopkins to OT

BALTIMORE, Md. The Gettysburg College women's soccer team battled a hard-fought match against fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University, but fell in a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss as the Blue Jays slipped in the game-winning goal at the 97th minute.

The Bullets now find themselves in sixth place in the Centennial Conference standings heading into the final game of the season. With 14 points, Gettysburg trails Haverford by two points for the fifth and final conference playoff spot. The Bullets and Dickinson will meet Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Carlisle, Pa.

The Bullets went into their seventh overtime match of the season while forcing the Blue Jays to their first overtime contest this season.

Facing an offense that has outscored its opponents 51-9 over the course of this season, freshman Madelyn Cunningham (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) tied a season-high six saves for the Bullets. She collected two stops in the opening half and then registered four saves in the second half, three of which came during a crucial time in the final seven minutes of regulation.

In the opening half, both teams battled it out in an evenly played contest. Gettysburg's defense played tough against a Johns Hopkins offense, who is tied for 33rd in Division III in total goals, to just six shots, two on goal, in the half.

The second half provided plenty of excitement and aggressive offensive touches between both squads as each missed scoring opportunities. The Bullets had back-to-back chances at the 57:50 and 57:54 markers, respectively, as freshman Molly O'Shea (Reading, Pa./Wilson) shot was blocked, then senior Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) grabbed the loose ball and kicked it towards the cage, but it went wide left. The final shot on goal came from freshman Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) with 14 minutes left in regulation, but the Blue Jays goalie saved it.

Johns Hopkins offense was hammering at the cage during the final seven minutes of regulation, but Cunningham made three incredible stops to help the Bullets head into overtime.

In the 97th minute, Johns Hopkins broke through as Michelle Santangelo crossed from the right sideline to teammate Rachel Jackson who turned and fired a shot to the far post for the game-winner.

The Blue Jays remain perfect in the Centennial Conference with a 9-0 mark and hold a 13-game winning streak, while the Bullets fall 8-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in league play.

Johns Hopkins outshot Gettysburg 14-8 and held the 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
