Blue Jays Win Three of Four at Mid-Winter Classic

Morales Goes 4-0 to Lead Johns Hopkins

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The JHU wrestling team picked up its first three dual-meet victories of the season as the Blue Jays topped host Penn College (33-10), New England College (45-5) and King's (35-21) at the Mid-Winter Classic on Saturday.  Johns Hopkins, which also dropped a 45-3 decision to 19th-ranked NYU, is now 3-4 on the year.

Round One vs. Penn College
The Blue Jays won five of the first six matches and 7-of-10 overall to top the Wildcats.  In addition to a pair of forfeits to open the match, the Blue Jays got bonus-point victories from Lucas Escobar (technical fall at 149), Isaac Morales (first-period pin at 184) and Miles Gilliam (major decision at 197).

Round Two vs. New England College
After falling behind 5-0, the Blue Jays won the final nine bouts to win their second straight on the day.  Each of the final five individual wins earned bonus points for the Blue Jays.  Freshman Bradlee Lamontagne jump-started that spree at 157 with an 11-2 major decision, while Dane Morgan (165), Karl Tayeb (197) and Henri Behaeghal (285) all scored first-period pins.

Round Three vs. NYU
The Violets won nine of 10 bouts to secure the victory.  Morales scored the only win for the Blue Jays as he topped Jackson Kligerman, 6-4, at 184.  Gilliam and sophomore Jeremy Berger dropped narrow decisions at 197 and 125, respectively.  Gilliam fell, 6-3, to Jack La Corte, while Berger dropped a tight 10-7 decision to Jonathan Keltz.

Round Four vs. King's
The Monarchs led 15-6 after Matt Sparks decisioned Joe Paul, 8-4, at 149.  Johns Hopkins responded by winning five of the final six bouts to earn the 15-point victory.  Morgan scored a 17-2 technicall fall victory over Nicholas Palazzolo at 165 and Gilliam sealed the victory when he pinned Isaac Mensah in 1:51.

Notes of Interest
Morales went 4-0 on the day and is now just one victory shy of 75 for his career • Cavallo, who is ranked seventh in the nation at 133, won all three of his matches and is now 17-2 on the year and 58-20 in his career • Lamontagne and Morgan both went 3-1 on the day - Morgan is now just three wins shy of 50 in his career.
