How it Happened
First Half:
- Gettysburg saw plenty of chances in the early going for a goal but was unable to put one into the net. The Bullets finished with five shots to the Warriors three.
Second Half:
- The Bullets continued to battle against a Lycoming team that earned an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament a season ago. After nine shots at the frame, the Orange and Blue tallied one in off a free kick that senior Precious Ozoh (Abuja, Nigeria/Holderness School [N.H.]) took at the 73rd minute. Weikert and Thomas were credited with setting up Molina inside the 18 as he shot high to the right side.
- The Warriors did not back down, especially in the final minute of action. A free kick set Lycoming up just outside the 18 on the left side of the field when Colin Wieand headed the ball in to tie the game at 1-1 with 38 seconds left.
Overtime
- It took 3:24 for Molina to register the game-winner as he rocketed far outside the 18. The goalkeeper for Lycoming had his hands on the ball but it bounced over his head as the Bullets took the win.
Quote from the Coach
"This tops off a good week for the team with wins against Stevenson and Lycoming," said head coach
Mark Mettrick. "We are very pleased that
Jonathan Molina scored two goals and pleased that we found a way to win against a tough Lycoming team. I am encouraged by the number of chances we created today and feel we need to be more clinical in front of the goal."
By the Numbers
- Gettysburg held the advantage in shots (18-10) and corner kicks (9-2).
- Goalkeeper Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) finished with three saves and Lycoming's Zack Donoway stopped seven shots.
- Today marked the first time in Molina's career where he has scored multiple goals in one game.
All-Time Series
Gettysburg now holds a 7-1 lead over Lycoming in the all-time series that dates back to 1957. The Bullets have captured the last four decisions, with the Warriors' one series victory coming in 1960. This was the first meeting between Gettysburg and Lycoming since 2001.
