Swimming Teams Sweep Mary Washington

Kearns, Weaver Are Multi-Winners for Women’s Team

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College swimming teams kept their perfect records intact with a sweep of the University of Mary Washington in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Gettysburg College Bullets Pool.

The women's team won on the final event, earning a 138.5-122.5 decision to improve to 6-0. The men's squad captured a 145-117 decision to push its record to 5-0.

Freshman Cooper Kearns won three events while classmate Haley Weaver captured two for the women's team, which swept two events (200- and 500-freestyle). The Bullet men did not have a double winner but also swept both the 200-freestyle and 200-backstroke.

The Bullets were competing for the first time in 49 days due to semester break.

Both Mary Washington teams fell to 7-3.

The women's team led just 127.5-116.5 heading into the 200-freestyle relay. But sophomore Ali Roth, freshman Ellie Houser, junior Caroline Coolidge, and Weaver clinched the victory for the Bullets, winning in 1:42.34.

Kearns was a triple-winner for the fourth time in six dual meets this season as she touched first in the 1,000-freestyle (11:10.39), the 200-butterfly (2:16.03), and the 500-freestyle (5:19.68). Weaver claimed the 200-freestyle (1:56.52) and the 200-backstroke (2:11.61).

Roth added a win in the 50-freestyle (25.97).

In men's action, six Bullets earned six individual victories: senior Matt Libby in the 200-freestyle in (1:45.27), freshman Stu Cubbison in the 50-freestyle (22.08), freshman Jason Potter in the 1000-freestyle (48.25), freshman Mike Harmon in the 200-backstroke (1:58.26), senior Roger Nawrocki in the 200-breaststroke (2:16.98), and senior Drew Close in the 500-freestyle (4:52.23).

The men's team also registered a win in the 200-freestyle relay, with Potter, Harmon, Cubbison, and Libby clocking a 1:25.13.

Gettysburg continues its season next Saturday, when it visits Swarthmore College for a Centennial Conference meet starting at 2 p.m.
