No. 13 Men's Basketball Begins Year With Victory

EWING, N.J.—Swarthmore College Men's Basketball, ranked No. 13 in the country in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, tipped off the 2018-19 campaign with an 82-65 road win over the TCNJ Lions on Tuesday night.

The Garnet held onto a slim three-point lead over the Lions at halftime, 36-33, but pulled away late in the second half. Swarthmore led by five points with 3:25 remaining and out-scored the hosts 12-0 the rest of the game.

Five different players scored in double-figures for the Garnet, and sophomore Conor Harkins led the team with 20 points. Harkins reached 20 points for the second time in his career, the first time being his 27-point performance in last year's season opener. Both Zac O'Dell and freshman George Visconti added 14 points. Cam Wiley chipped in 12 and Nate Shafer added 10. Both starting bigs O'Dell and Shafer went for double-doubles as the duo each had 10 rebounds. O'Dell also swatted away a game-high four shots, and Shafer added the team's other two blocks.

An element of the Garnet's success in the past few seasons was still present in Tuesday's win—domination on the rebounding glass. Swarthmore out-rebounded the Lions 51-37.

TCNJ was led by Randy Walko's game-high 23 points and Travis Jocelyn's 11.

Swarthmore shot 41.7 percent from the floor, but didn't have their best night from 3-point territory, hitting 19.4 percent of their attempts (7-for-36). The Garnet did force the Lions to shoot worse from downtown. TCNJ connected on just 2-of-23 3-point attempts for an 8.7 percent evening. The Lions shot 34.4 percent overall.

Swarthmore fans get to see the Garnet at home for the first time this season on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Delaware Valley University.
