LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's golf team opened its title defense on a commanding note on day one of the Centennial Conference Championship, breaking out to a 20-stroke lead over the field at Conestoga Country Club on Saturday.
Gettysburg, who is seeking its ninth-straight championship title, posted a 346 on the par-70 5,863 yard course in the opening round. Marymount University (Va.) registered a 366 with Dickinson College just two strokes behind in third.
Three Bullets players finished among the top 10 in round one. Junior
Skylar Frankiewicz (Concord, Mass./Concord Carllisle), who is in the hunt for her first title and third-straight all-conference award, led the way with an 80, hitting a birdie on hole No. 11, and nine bogeys. Classmate
Hannah Fireman (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) also had a solid day after shooting an 83 to tie for second. The junior collected 10 bogeys and two birdies on holes No. 7 and No. 18. Junior
Katie McCarthy (Westlake, Ohio/Hathaway Brown School) concluded day one by carding an 89 to tie for eighth.
Senior
Gillian Marini (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) is tied for 12th after shooting a 94, while freshman
Cameron D'Amica (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley), who is making her Centennial Conference debut, is tied for 17th with a 97.
Opening tee times for Sunday's final round are set for noon.
