W&L Pulls Away From Johns Hopkins, 29-12

Cavallo, Reyes, Morales Score Wins for JHU

BALTIMORE, MD – The Washington & Lee wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts to fuel a 29-12 win over Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference match at Goldfarb Gym Friday evening.  The win improves the Generals' record 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays slip to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Where it Was Won
Washington & Lee took control by winning four of five bouts between 141 and 174 to turn a 4-4 tie into a 20-9 advantage.  A major decision from Zach Bylykbashi at 141 and a first-period pin by Bryce Crew at 149 quickly turned the deadlock into a 14-4 lead.  Shane Conners added an 8-4 win over Dane Morgan and 165 and Alex Horne capped the spree with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Nathan Wertheimer at 174.  Wertheimer led 5-0 after a four-point near-fall late in the second period and an early escape in the third, but Horne scored a takedown and added four back points to secure the win.

Blue Jay Winners
Senior Ricky Cavallo scored a 13-2 major decision for Johns Hopkins at 133 pounds.  He jumped to a 6-0 first-period lead on a takedown and four-point near fall and added an escape and takedown in each of the final two periods to pick up his fifth major of the year.  Sophomore Dominick Reyes added a technical fall victory at 157 that pulled the Blue Jays within 14-9 after falling behind 14-4.  Reyes led 10-2 at the end of the first and secured the tech fall with a four back points in the final seconds of the third period.  Senior Isaac Morales needed overtime top Rex Hallyburton, 2-1.  Morales scored an escape in the first ride-out period and then held Hallyburton down for 30 seconds in the second to pick the victory.

Notes of Interest
Cavallo improved to 21-2 and ran his winning streak to 10 • Reyes is now 14-3 on the year and technical fall was his team-leading fifth of the year • Morales notched his 21st win of the season and the 78th of his career.
