Bullets Drop a Pair at Washington

Augustus Homers in Second Game

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Gettysburg College baseball team was swept by Washington College in a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader on Sunday, losing 8-3 in the opener and 12-5 in the nightcap.

The Bullets (7-15, 1-5 CC) registered 20 hits on the day, but left 18 runners on base.

Washington (18-9, 2-4 CC) trailed for only an inning and a half for the afternoon and swept Gettysburg for the first time since 2011.

Senior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy), sophomore Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), and freshman Sean Murphy (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) collected three hits apiece for Gettysburg while freshman Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) homered in the second game.

Freshman Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) pitched well in the early going of the opener for the Bullets, allowing just two hits over the first five innings. However, the Shoremen managed to score a run without a hit in the first inning, then pushed their lead to 4-0 with three runs on two hits, two errors, and a walk in the third.

Washington starter Nick Roberti blanked Gettysburg over the first five innings, but the Bullets got on the scoreboard in the sixth, when senior Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) led off with a single and was doubled in by Murphy. But the Shoremen came right back with another three-spot in the bottom of the inning, when Ball left the game with one out.

The Shoremen padded their lead with another run in the seventh to assume an 8-1 advantage. Probst stroked a two-run single in the ninth to set the final score.

Probst and LaCoe each finished with two hits in the opener. Ball (1-3) was handed the loss for the Bullets, yielding seven runs (five earned) over 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Sam Blanchard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) shut out the Shoremen over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Roberti (2-0) allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings to earn the win for Washington.

In the nightcap, Augustus gave the Bullets a 1-0 lead when he blasted his second homer of the season – a solo shot to left in the second.

Junior starter Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) shut out Washington over the first two innings before the Shoremen tied the game with an unearned run in the third. The hosts then broke the game open with six runs off four different pitchers over the next three innings, pushing their lead to 7-1. Washington put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth.

The Bullets refused to go easily and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the ninth, with senior Josh Cubell (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), Murphy, freshman Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), and Sneed each drilling an RBI-single.

Sneed finished 3-for-4 with a double in the nightcap while sophomore Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) and Murphy each belted two hits.

Wortmann (0-2) gave up four runs (two earned) over four innings and was handed the loss. Matt Furlong (3-0) hurled five innings to earn the win for the Shoremen.

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, when they host Johns Hopkins at 3:30 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
