WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The
25th-ranked Washington and Lee wrestling team posted a 3-0 record on Friday to win Group D during the first day of competition at the Budd
Whitehill Duals hosted by
Lycoming College.
W&L (8-2) opened with a 44-3 win over Wilkes University (5-5), giving Head Coach
Nathan Shearer his
50th victory as the Generals' mentor. The Blue & White then registered a 24-20 win over Ohio Northern (9-5), before wrapping up the day with a 25-13 win over
23rd-ranked Castleton University (7-4).
The match with ONU was a nail-biter to the very end, with the Generals trailing 20-18 entering the final bout of the match. Sophomore 285-pounder
Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) came through in the clutch, recording a win by fall, pinning Logan Painter in 1:13 to give W&L its second straight win over the Polar Bears.
Against
Castleton, the Generals seized control of the match after pins by junior
Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) at 141 pounds and sophomore
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A.
Foran) at 157 pounds. W&L then clinched the match with a win by decision from senior 184-pounder
Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) and a major decision victory by sophomore 197-pounder
Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols).
For the day, Luth, Hallyburton and junior 165-pounder
Nick Konovalchik (North Andover, Mass. / Brooks School) all finished with 3-0 records.
Washington and Lee will continue action on Saturday with the final rounds from Lycoming College. The Generals will face 12th-ranked TCNJ at 10:30 am and will then compete in the championship round at 1:30 pm.
