SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer earned an important three points in the Centennial Conference standings with a 1-0 win over McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman defender
Ben Lau scored his second goal of the year to help Swarthmore improve to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Centennial action. McDaniel slipped to 1-4-1 in conference with the loss.
Swarthmore had an overwhelming command of possession in the first half and took 10 shots to McDaniel's three first half attempts. However, it took until the 71st minute for Swarthmore to get on the scoreboard.
After a quick throw-in on the left side in towards the baseline, Swarthmore's
Ethan Witkowski drove a pass from across the field past the far post.
Yuheng Wang found the pass and headed it straight down to Lau's foot right on the doorstep. Lau finished the close-range volley for the only score of the game.
Swarthmore's midfield and defense continued to keep McDaniel far away from goal. The Green Terror only took one shot in the second half.
Oliver Steinglass got the win between the posts with one save.
Up next for the Garnet is a game against a team trailing them in the league standings. Swarthmore travels to Washington College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
