Caputo Racks Up 20 Saves against F&M

13th-ranked Diplomats top Gettysburg 3-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Junior Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) recorded the most saves by a Gettysburg College goalie in 15 years, but No. 13 Franklin & Marshall College found its offense in the second half on the way to a 3-0 win over the Bullets at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

Caputo managed a career-high 20 saves in the contest, marking the most stops by a Gettysburg (6-6, 3-3 CC) goalie since Jessy O'Neil '04 posted 22 saves against Ursinus College on Oct. 25, 2003.

Before Caputo began tallying saves, the Bullets produced the game's first shot attempts. Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) and sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) each slapped the ball at the cage 30 seconds into the contest, but Franklin & Marshall (11-2, 5-1 CC) Ilianna Santangelo stopped both attempts.

The Diplomats came right back with a flurry of shot attempts at the Gettysburg cage. Caputo turned away 11 of those attempts, while sophomore Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior Sam Nicol (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) recorded defensive saves. The teams went into halftime with zeroes on the scoreboard.

Soares produced another shot stopped by Santagelo early in the second half before F&M went on the attack. Caputo stopped a pair of shots in the period, but Phoebe Woods slipped a baseline pass in front of the cage to Courtney Kennedy for the game's first score in the 51st minute.

Just three minutes later, Colleen Francis laced a pass from the wing to the middle of the field and Lily Mynott knocked the bouncing ball into the cage to make it 2-0. Mynott would strike again with 11 minutes remaining, this time converting a pass from the top of the arc by Melissa Gula.

A fourth goal for the Diplomats was denied at the cage by senior defender Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) for a defensive save with nine minutes left.

Franklin & Marshall finished with a 40-5 lead in shots and a 14-1 lead in penalty corners.

Gettysburg resumes action against Muhlenberg College at home this Saturday at 1 p.m.
