Softball Swept by Defending CC Champs

The Muhlenberg softball team dropped a pair of home games to defending Centennial Conference champion Franklin & Marshall by scores of 8-5 and 11-3.

The Mules (8-12, 2-4 CC) battled back from a 7-0 hole in the first game. Junior Kristy Selby hit a RBI double to left and junior Amelia Shelley singled home two more runs to cut the deficit to three after the third inning.

Both teams added a run in the sixth inning, but Muhlenberg could not add any more runs in the final two innings.

Junior Kristina Qualben smashed her third home run of the season to give the Mules a 1-0 lead in the second game. The Diplomats, however, would score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings in taking the lead for good.

Junior Allyson Sweeney and senior Karissa Astrella each had RBI hits in the later game, with Sweeney singling home Shelley in the fourth and Astrella doubling to plate senior Hanna Caiola. Astrella finished the day with two hits, giving her 101 in her career.

Selby and Sweeney led the Mules with three hits on the day, and Caiola went 2-for-4 with a double in the first game. Selby extended her current hitting streak to 13 games.

Freshman Sophie Chong pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief in the first game, allowing only four hits and one earned run.
