LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) became just the third Gettysburg College pitcher to reach 50 career wins as the Bullets split at Centennial Conference foe Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday.
Gettysburg (15-18-1, 5-8-1 CC) took down Franklin & Marshall (15-17, 7-7 CC) in an aggressive game one by the final score of 2-1. The Bullets rally fell short in the nightcap as they dropped a 4-3 decision against the Diplomats.
An RBI single by Caitlyn Erdman in the bottom of the first inning gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to produce a run until the top of the fourth. After sophomore
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) reached base on an error by the Diplomats shortstop, she then advanced to second base on a ground out by sophomore
Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata). Baker then stole third and took advantage of the defensive error by the catcher, allowing her the opportunity to score the tying run.
The Bullets and Diplomats continued to stay at 1-1 deadlock heading into the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Baker put Gettysburg ahead as she smashed her fifth home run of the season, making it 2-1.
F&M threatened a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Clauser struck out the leadoff batter, but a single, sacrifice bunt, and another single put runners in scoring position at first and third base. The Bullets' defense prevailed as the final batter grounded out to the pitcher to end game one.
Clauser tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. She became the second pitcher to reach 50 career wins in the last two seasons as former teammate
Aileen Reilly '18 achieved this accomplished last year. Reilly is the all-time leader in wins at Gettysburg with 56.
Baker finished with a homer, stolen base, RBI, and two runs scored. Junior
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), senior
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey), junior
Nicole Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), and Colline each tallied a hit.
F&M did all the scoring damage in the bottom of the first inning as Hannah Salvucci belted a grand slam to go up 4-0 in the nightcap.
Gettysburg cut the lead down to one in the top of the third frame when junior
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) notched a two-RBI single up the middle, allowing Farese and junior
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) to cross the plate. Cowell opened the inning with a single up the middle and Farese hit a single bunt to reach base. Julie then stole second and senior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) collected an RBI single through the left side.
The Diplomats pitcher Sabrina Ryan struck out five of her game-high eight in the final four innings to stop the Bullets from rallying a comeback.
Julie paced the Bullets with two RBI, a stolen base, hit, and run scored. Taylor, Cowell, and Farese all registered a hit as well.
Gettysburg hosts Washington College for Senior Day in a Centennial Conference doubleheader this Saturday at 1 p.m. to close out the regular season.
