Conti, Roberts Break Records As Garnet Beat Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Swarthmore College Baseball beat No. 21-ranked Johns Hopkins 7-3 on Monday at Clothier Field.

The Garnet (23-12) didn't get the help they needed to make the conference playoffs. They have the same record as Muhlenberg, but Swarthmore takes fifth place because they lost both games they played against the Mules this season.

Garnet senior Jackson Roberts clubbed his 18th collegiate home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. He passed senior teammate Charles Levitt for the school record in what could be his last at bat at Swarthmore. Roberts leads the team with eight homers this season. He set the single-season school record with 10 last year.

Swarthmore senior pitcher Ricky Conti pitched two scoreless innings in relief and earned his 18th career win. He passes Ed Green's record of 17 that stood for 34 years. Conti set Swarthmore's single-season wins record with 12 in 2018. He was a third-team All-American last year.

Jack Corkery was Swarthmore's No. 1 pitcher and primarily a starter this season. But he came on in relief for three innings on Monday and tied the all-time saves record at Swarthmore with nine for his career. He struck out seven Blue Jays batters. Corkery set the single-season saves record with eight last year. He's fifth in the Centennial with a 2.20 ERA this season.

Senior Conor Elliott led Swarthmore with three hits in what could be his last college game. Juniors Jared Gillen and Holden Bridge as well as freshman Luke Mutz had two hits each. The conference regular season comes to a close with Bridge at the top of the conference in batting average. He batted .434 in his first season as a full-time starter for the team.

Seventh-year head coach Matt Midkiff is attempting to schedule a few more games for his team with hope that it will get them an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Swarthmore's season could be over without making it to the College World Series like last season, but the team won 23 games this year. Before setting the program record with 38 wins in 2018, the Garnet had not won 23 games in a season since 1985.
