Garnet's Upset Bid At No. 9 Ursinus Falls Just Short

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse pushed No. 9 Ursinus College Bears to the edge on Saturday, but fell just short of pulling off the upset and lost 16-13.

The Swarthmore Garnet (7-2, 0-2 Centennial) had the Bears (8-1, 2-1 CC) on the ropes early on. After conceding the first goal, Swarthmore then scored six consecutive times to close out the first quarter. Dylan Rittenhouse and Nathaniel Johns both posted a pair of goals in the opening frame.

Rittenhouse would finish with a team-high four goals. Johns finished with the pair of goals as did Ryan Mulvey. Andrew Estella, Jake Ross, Griffin Johnston, Quin Seivold and Zander Levitz all scored a goal as well.

After taking the 6-1 lead, Swarthmore then gave up three straight to Ursinus to open the second frame. The Garnet recovered by capitalizing on a man-up opportunity on a goal by Mulvey. Ursinus tagged one more goal before halftime to cut Swarthmore's lead to 7-5.

Things were looking up for the Garnet to start the third quarter as Rittenhouse and Levitz struck for back-to-back goals. Ursinus, however, made up some ground with a string of three straight goals. The Garnet scored to interrupt the streak, but the Bears then scored three more goals and took the lead at 11-10 with 5:16 remaining in the third.

Not to be deterred, Swarthmore evened the score at 11-11 with 58 seconds left in the third quarter on a tally by Seivold. But with just 11 seconds left in the frame, Ursinus netted a goal to go into the fourth quarter ahead 12-11.

The Garnet, now playing from behind scored twice in the fourth quarter and trailed by just one goal with 8:22 to go following Rittenhouse's season-high fourth goal of the game.

Unfortunately, the Garnet couldn't get any closer as  Ursinus closed out the game with a pair of goals.

Statistically, the Garnet and the Bears were very similar in several categories. The teams had an equal number of ground balls (34), faceoff wins (16) and EMO success (2-for-5). Ursinus had just two more shots that Swarthmore, 44-42.

In goal for the Garnet, Frankie Dillon recorded 10 saves.

Swarthmore travels to Gettysburg College on Saturday to face the No. 7 Bullets.
