Seniors were the story at the beginning and the end as the Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its Centennial Conference dual season with a 34-7 win against Gettysburg.
Prior to the match, the Mules recognized seniors
Ryan Kaplow,
Hunter Gill,
Ronnie Grevera and
Michael Ruane. And in the final bout of the match, Ruane - wrestling in a CC dual for only the second time in his career - pinned the defending CC 149-pound champion in just 47 seconds.
Ruane's fastest career pin capped a strong all-around showing for the Mules, who won eight of 10 bouts in the dual and all three exhibition matches.
All three of Muhlenberg's regionally ranked wrestlers won handily. Sophomore
Brandon Bowles opened the match at 157 with his sixth major decision of the season, sophomore
Anson Dewar remained undefeated against Division III opponents with a pin in 1:48 at 174, and junior
Joey Lamparelli recorded his 50th career win with a 6-2 decision at 125.
The Mules (10-6, 1-0) also prevailed in three close bouts. At 197, graduate student
Angelo Mahaffey scored a third-period takedown to secure an 8-6 decision in his season debut. At 285, freshman
Ben Krauss broke open a close bout with a four-point near-fall late in the third period.
Junior
Christopher Dalmau came back from an early deficit to win at 141. He broke a 2-2 tie on a takedown with 15 seconds left in the second period and clinched his 8-4 decision by taking down his opponent with 11 seconds left in the third.
