YORK, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team currently sits in fourth-place out of 12 teams after the first day of competition at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College of Pennsylvania on Friday.
 
The College of New Jersey, ranked 12th nationally, leads the way after day one with 38.5 points and is followed closely by 21st-ranked Averett with 36.5 points.  Tenth-ranked Johnson & Wales is third with 35 points and the Generals have 28 points.  Third-ranked Stevens rounds out the Top 5 with 25 points.
 
The Generals have advanced six individual wrestlers to the quarterfinal round of five different weight classes after the opening day.
 
Junior Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) won his opening match at 125 pounds over Will Schwartz of Ursinus by a score of 11-2.  He will face Brent Lorin of Johns Hopkins in the quarters on Saturday.
 
First-year Nic Zamaloff (Wall Township, N.J. / Academy of Allied Health and Science) notched two wins on his way to the quarterfinals of the 149-pound bracket.  He opened with a 6-3 victory over Connor Doherty of The College of New Jersey and then knocked off Raekwon Jackson of Apprentice, 14-6.  He will match up with Jared Blair of York in the quarterfinals.
 
At 157 pounds, junior Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) defeated Stevens' Branden Bulatao by pinning him in 1:50.  He will entertain Thomas Baldwin of Averett in his quarterfinal match on Saturday morning.
 
The Blue & White has two wrestlers in the quarterfinal round of the 165-pound bracket.  Senior Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) pinned TCNJ's Jack Murray in 1:23 during his opener and he will match up with Eric Hutchinson of York in the quarters.  First-year Harrison Kelly (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals.  He downed Matthew Henson of Apprentice with a pin in 4:03 and then posted a 10-8 victory over Anthony Taylor of Averett.  He will face Matt Surich of TCNJ in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
 
Senior Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) has also advanced to the quarterfinals of the 285-pound weight class.  He pinned Gavin Range of Ursinus in 0:43 and will face Liridon Leka of Johnson & Wales on Saturday morning.
 
Second day action begins at 9:15 am on Saturday.
