Eagles Fall to Red Devils Rally in Overtime Defeat

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata field hockey team's two first-half goals were not enough for Dickinson as the Red Devils persevered for a 3-2 overtime victory against the Eagles Sunday afternoon at Knox Stadium.

The Eagles fired out of the gates, producing six shots in the first quarter of play, with Sarah Everett, Sierra Rossman, and Brooke Franke each producing a pair of shots. Brittney McMullen was kept well occupied as she saved five shots on goal in the quarter. In the final moments of the quarter, a Tess Ledeboer goal assisted by Hannah Moore opened the scoring in the contest.

The second quarter saw a shift in goal-scoring chances as Dickinson produced eight shots across the period, including four saves from McMullen. The lone Juniata shot in the quarter saw Ledeboer put her second goal past Dickinson goalkeeper Saige Stevens with an assist from Kalee Rothermel in the 28th minute.

Control of the contest began to shift in favor of the Red Devils in the third quarter, as Juniata produced their last shot of the contest from Everett in the 31st minute. The Red Devils were kept quiet until the 38th minute as a blocked Becca Woods shot was swiftly followed by a Katie Marthins goal assisted by Abby Marthins and Malena Yandow-Harding. Katie Marthins earned a brace just two minutes later on a game-tying goal that was assisted by Abby Marthins.

The fourth quarter saw three shots from the Red Devils that forced two saves from McMullen to send the game into overtime.

Overtime saw few chances in the opening moments until Dickinson's Emma Synder scored the game-winner in the 67th minute to earn their first win of 2022.

McMullen tallied ten saves for a .769 save percentage in the contest.

The Eagles field hockey team hits the road for the first time in the 2022 season as they head to Meadville, Pa., to play the Allegheny Gators on Wednesday, September 7. This marks the first meeting of these two teams, and Allegheny enters the contest with three victories to open the season.
