Field Hockey Clinches Playoff Berth with Senior Night Thriller

What began as a memorable night ended up being even more memorable when senior Stephi Rydgren scored with no time remaining in the second overtime to give the Muhlenberg field hockey team a 1-0 win against McDaniel.

Combined with a loss by Gettysburg, the win clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth for the Mules (7-7, 6-2) - their fifth in the last six years.

Rydgren was front and center before the Senior Night game along with classmate Emily Davis and junior Courtney Allen, who is leaving Muhlenberg for optometry school at the end of the year. And she had the spotlight again two hours later, scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win for the third time this season.

The Mules had advantages of 25-10 in shots and 20-9 in penalty corners but were repeatedly thwarted by the Green Terror (4-11, 2-7). Play opened up in the first overtime, with sophomore back Sophie Beeler breaking up several McDaniel rushes.

The action was even more wide open in the second overtime. Sophomore Rachel Richards hit the post three minutes in, and two minutes later junior Jordan Segrave made a tough save on a blast by McDaniel's leading scorer.

The Green Terror goalie made some tough saves as well, keeping the game scoreless. The Mules were awarded a penalty corner with 30 seconds remaining and let the clock run down. An initial shot by Rydgren was saved and cleared outside the circle, but not outside the dashed line. Rydgren finally ended the game by tipping in a diagonal cross from sophomore Morgan Tietz at the left post.

It wasn't the first time the Mules won a game with no time remaining - it happened in the 2016 ECAC semifinals on a penalty stroke at the end of regulation.

The win brought Muhlenberg back to .500 after an 0-4 start. All seven of the Mules' win are by one goal.
